Technically, the printer cable was perfectly fine; it was just laying on the floor unharmed.

I'm sorry but that is something that I would totally do. I'd kick and scream at the printer and computer and half an hour later just plug the stupid thing in.
But I'd be drunk so that is totally excusable.

half the time i just make do with non-functioning aps / hardware / software / etc because i'm sort of petrified that the problem is something easy like that, and i don't ever want to be That Person.

Maybe they were just checking to see if it was one of those new wireless printers they've heard about…I have one of those, it just doesn't work unless it's plugged in.
