do you see any wires?

At my last job, I sat next to a lady that wasn’t the most tech-savvy. Everyone there had laptops, which we plugged into docking stations every day at work and took home. Why we took them home, I’m not entirely sure. Nobody did work at home. The only theory I have is they were afraid of someone breaking in at night and stealing laptops that were several years old and would go for approximately $6 on the black market.
One day she turns to me and the following conversation ensues:
“Hey Jeff, I have this box that keeps popping up. How do More >

The person who calls at 6:45 is always the worst call of the day. I work until 7:00pm, and every day, I get a call at 6:45 from someone who makes me sorry that I have ears and know how to answer a phone.
Yesterday, a lady lost her printers from her computer. This isn’t all that uncommon, so I took remote control of her screen to show her how to re add missing printers. I walked her through adding the printer that she was currently using, and she seemed to grasp the process. She then asked me if I could do More >

I think my all-time favorite story comes from a friend of mine when he was working on a help desk that supported dial-up Internet users. The call center was based in Wisconsin, because we TALK NORMAL HERE. However, they supported users from all over the country, including the south. Did you know that in the south you don’t “click” the mouse? As soon as you cross that magical border, you have to “mash” you mouse. Seems like overkill to me, but hey, maybe that mouse killed your brother and now you’re out for revenge.

This just happened not five minutes ago to the rep at the next desk over:
Fifteen minutes of helping a client with her computer, and still no further to finding out the cause. Her computer would stay on for about a minute, then just turn off suddenly. We’re trying everything, and I can’t get her to even boot into safe mode because the F8 key doesn’t work.“Can you find another keyboard to swap out, one that we know works?”“Oh sure, I have another one right here, its brand new”“..Oh, you have a new keyboard? Where did you get that?”“Well it came More >

“My screen has gray over the words, and when I move my mouse over it, the gray goes away”
At first, I thought she was seeing things, so I remoted (yes, its an IT verb) to her computer, which allows me to see her screen. Sure enough, on an excel-type spreadsheet, there was a faint gray haze over the cells, and if you moved the mouse over it, the faint gray would disappear.
This however, is on an application we don’t make and are forever apologizing for because its not very well made. I know none of this matters to the end user, More >
