tour de cure! i made it!
Jun 29th
I know this is a week late, but real life and things have gotten in the way. To make up for my absence, I’ll even throw in some PICTURES! How about that!
First off, let me thank all of the people who donated and pledged for this ride. The American Diabetes Association, myself, and Wilford Brimley thank you for your generosity.
First off, all those who pledged did in fact make it onto my jersey.
My camera stinks, sue me.
The one on the top is for my mom and mother in law.
Below that, we have Travis, Coffey, Ducksauce, Ed, Semky, and AdamGISWizard. The two corporate logos on top were some matching donations donors were able to swing, so they matched the contributions and able to double me up right at the end.
Folks, I raised $505 for the ride, and you best believe that I did all 100k of it. My legs weren’t right for the next week; I just wobbled around the house like a newborn deer.
Here’s me sportin’ the jersey before I got all sweaty and unphotogenic.
Wife got some pictures of me at the start line with all the other folks who were doing the 100k and 50k.
Folks, I have to say, I did pretty well. I averaged over 16mph for the entire time, and beat out two teams that were racing together in their own little pelotons. The last fifteen miles were not so much fun as they were all uphill and into the wind, and it’s really discouraging to look at your speedometer and see that you’re going 7mph.
Once again, thank you all for your support, and look for me to be fundraising again next year!
And now you can start commenting on how awesome I look in bike shorts.
saturday saturday saturday
Jun 15th
I know I’ve bugged you all about this before, and I promise that the race is this Saturday, so very soon you won’t have to see me beg you for money any more.
But since I have limited time left, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE donate!
Click here, click the Tour de Cure on the nav bar above, click the meter over on the left, click just about anywhere on this page. They all take you to the same place, which is the page where you can use your credit card to donate online (fancy, I know).
You all have been freaking fantastic in helping me hit my original goal, which was $300. Since then, I’ve decided to go nuts and raise it to $500, but I’m not forgetting that I already hit my goal thanks to all of you.
So far, my honorable list of donors (links included when applicable):
- Semky
- Travis
- Ducky the Daff
- My mother in law Barb
- My mom Suzanne
- Coffeypot
- Ed
- Aunt Lauren
- Adam the GIS Machine
All of these folks are getting their names and URLs on my jersey, which I’m designing right now. But don’t worry! There’s room for your name too.
I’m also working on a prototype jersey that will allow people to click on the URL’s on my shirt and it will take them to your webpage, but I don’t think I’ll like being poked that much.
Last chance folks! Let’s do this!
getting too close for comfort
May 24th
Alright folks, it’s getting closer and closer, and I’m still short of my goal. I wanted to raise $300, and right now I’m only about 2/3 or the way there.
I want to give a big hell yes shout out to those who’ve pledged so far, and here they are:
- Semky
- My mom and mother in law (sadly they do not have a URL)
- Daffy the Ducky
- Coffey
- Ed
I have an entire jersey to fill up with names and pictures and URL’s and advertisements (if you have a product, let me know) and right now I pretty much have the left sleeve and part of the back covered.
Even if you just throw $5 into the pot, I will give you my eternal thanks and plug the crap out of whatever it is you want me to plug.
Shut up Ed, I know what you’re thinking.
Just go over to my pledge page or click on the link in my nav bar. You can use your credit card online, your name shows up in the fancy little scrolling marquee thing, and you’ll have a happy warm feeling all day today.
If you have something that you’d want to auction off for a giveaway or anything like that, please contact me and let me know. I’m desperate and willing to do (almost) anything to get to $300!
another plea

As you may or may not know, depending on if you visit the site or are using the reader, I am riding in the Tour de Cure in 8 weeks, which is a fundraising ride for the American Diabetes Association.
Right now, I’ve raised $145. The MINIMUM needed is $150. My goal was to raise $300, which puts me less than halfway there.
If you click here to my page, you can pledge online. Even just $5 would go towards helping many people with diabetes and trying to find a cure. Odds are you probably know someone who has diabetes; you can donate to my ride in someone’s name if you wish.
I’m taking the names of the donors and putting them on my racing jersey, along with URL’s (if it makes sense. My mom does not have a URL).
If that isn’t enough for you, here’s a picture of Wilford Brimley looking at you with puppy dog eyes.
If you can look at his sad, accusing face and say, “Sorry Wilford, I spent my $5 on a half-pump mocha with cinnamon this morning,” then you are made of steelier stuff than I.
time for shorts
Mar 17th
For the first time in months, last week as I was driving to work I had sunlight. I work at 6 a.m. and driving in that early all winter, I never got to see the sun. It was dark when I drove in, dark when I drove out, and my cubical is not near a window. For some reason, companies always like to put the tech support far from windows in a dark corner with half the lights burned out. I think HR believes that nerds will melt and flee in terror if there is too much light in their world.
In Wisconsin, the spring is a strange time. The mornings can be in the single digits and the afternoons can be in the 50′s. Yesterday, we opened all the windows to let in some fresh air because it was so warm, and then in the evening turned on a space heater for our feet and put on a snuggie. Not that I have a slanket or anything. If you use your heat and air conditioning in your house or car within the same day, you live in Wisconsin.
This weekend, I did a lot of yardwork. I put down some borders around the plants, threw down some more fertilizer, and added some grass seed to some bare patches. The hard part was working around the piles of snow still sitting in the middle of the yard.
Also, dog poop. When the dogs poop in the backyard during the winter, its gets buried and hibernates. Then when the snow thaws and makes everything squishy again, the poop appears in piles so large you wonder if your neighbors have been coming over at night and pooping in your yard.
But then daylight savings came around, and now I’m back to driving to work in the dark, and that makes me sad. The sun gave me hope for a brighter day. I could feel the positive energy in the morning. Now my positive energy comes from the terrible office mocha (crappy coffee and powdered hot chocolate mix) and a vitamin B cap. This is not a fair trade; the sun powers all life on the planet for millions of years, coffee powers me for about 45 minutes. The only similarity is you don’t want to be around the sun or me when the power runs out.
I don’t even understand the concept of daylight savings. Supposedly, back when everyone in this country was a farmer I guess it made more sense to maximize the daylight hours. However, this argument never made sense to me either, because farmers back then didn’t have a digital alarm clock to tell them to get up; they got up when the sun came up and the rooster crowed and went and did farmer things. Now all daylight savings does is make a couple people late on Monday morning and makes everyone’s internal body clock be slightly off for a week, which just makes everyone grumpy. As much fun as that is, what’s the point?
Now the argument has been that daylight savings saves us money by not having to turn the lights on. However, that argument has been debunked in studies and now they’re trying to keep daylight savings going…because they have such a powerful lobby? I haven’t seen anything on the news about the Daylighters protesting in front of the White House and demanding Obama to make sure the sun stops changing, but then again I barely watch the news.
I have mixed feelings about spring. On one hand, it has the promise of good things to come. On the other hand, it reminds me how lazy and fat I was over winter. Now I’m confronted with the prospect of taking my shirt off in front of people and blinding them with my pasty white skin and amazing them with my doughy physique. Until I start exercising again, I will look like a freshly opened tube of uncooked crescent rolls.
Now that it’s not cold enough outside to kill Bear Bryant in my backyard, it’s time for me to start riding my bike again. SHAMELESS PLUG: SPONSOR ME IN THE ADA TOUR DE CURE. My favorite part about spring is the spandex shorts make an appearance. Sometimes I will wear mine even when I have no intention of riding that day. They’re so aerodynamic that I can get between the couch and the refrigerator much more efficiently than in winter when I’m encumbered by a sweater and fuzzy slippers.
Ah yes, spring is here.
Bring it on you bastard.
the monster rides again
Jan 25th
For those eagle-eyed readers who come to my page instead of just reading my words of wit in Reader (yeah I’m guilty of that too), you may have noticed I’ve added another page and another box to my sidebar regarding the Tour de Cure. This is a bike ride that raises money for the American Diabetes Association, and is held across the country.
Everyone knows at least one person who has diabetes, and odds are they are able to live a normal and successful life while dealing with it. It’s because of research and work done that this condition is able to be controlled as well as it is, but the fact remains it is still a major health concern.
I know that in the wake of Haiti and other concerns that need our assistance, this cause might not be at the top of your list, and hopefully you have donated to them already. But if there is one thing we have proven before it’s that our generosity knows no limits.
If you have anything left over, please go to my pledge page to give; there is no amount too small. The website takes credit cards and will give you a receipt.
To sweeten the pot, I’m throwing down this challenge as well:
The more you give, the more I will ride.
That’s right folks, I will ride further for more money because I’ll do anything for more money. The race has three different lengths, and I’ve set amounts for distances fairly arbitrarily, but I’m sticking with them so no trying to change my mind. Unless you give me money, and then I might.
- $100 = 25k
- $200 = 60k
- $300 = 100k
If I raise over $300, I’ll take suggestions on what else I should do during the race (e.g. put streamers on my handlebars, grow out a mustache, sing showtunes at the 50k marker).
I also have a empty, white jersey that needs filling up. You know how bikers/racecars/any flat surface in a stadium is covered in ads? I will be that flat space. I will put all the names of anyone who pledges onto my jersey. I’ll attempt to use my limited graphic design skills to make you a logo (I’m not just going to write your name on with a Sharpie) but if you want to design your own logo, bring it on!. Want your business to get some free ad space? Donate and send me the ad!
Please, go to my page and see where the progress is at. If you know someone with diabetes or want to share your story, click on the Tour de Cure link on my nav bar and leave a note.
I need your help!
And thank you for your support.
